📰 The Big Picture

A commercial passenger plane sits on an airport tarmac under a blue sky.

A shocking mid-air crisis gripped the aviation world today after FlyDubai Captain Smit Machchhar miraculously fended off a violent cockpit stabbing by his own co-pilot, saving 170 lives and prompting airlines to scramble emergency flights to repatriate Israeli citizens from the 🇦🇪 UAE. Meanwhile, global geopolitical pressure points are tightening, from a string of weekly drone and missile attacks targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz to escalating strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. Domestically, economic anxieties are mounting as mortgage rates surge past 7 percent, and voters brace for pivotal midterm elections just 32 days away.

💡 The American Experience: Did You Know?

🧠 Percy Spencer's Melted Pocket Magnetron
In 1945, Raytheon engineer Percy Spencer was conducting military radar research when he suddenly realized that a peanut butter cluster bar in his pocket had completely melted. Intrigued, Spencer tested popcorn kernels and even an egg (which exploded in a colleague's face) before Raytheon officially filed a patent on October 8, 1945, for the microwave cooking process, transforming WWII combat radar technology into the ultimate kitchen convenience.

🏺 The Hydraulic Empire of Angkor
Khmer Empire · 9th to 15th centuries
Between the 9th and 15th centuries, the Khmer Empire at Angkor developed a sprawling, hyper-engineered water management network covering over 1,000 square kilometers, as mapped by the Greater Angkor Project in the early 2000s. Anchored by gargantuan reservoirs like the West Baray—which held up to 53 million cubic meters of monsoon runoff—this system supported an urban population of up to 750,000 people. It worked by collecting rainfall and gravity-feeding it through channels to irrigate massive rice networks during dry seasons. However, the system's extreme complexity and rigid architecture became its downfall when 14th-century climate volatility brought severe droughts punctuated by extreme monsoons, overwhelming and breaking the channels and contributing to the city's eventual abandonment.
